Food safety is a priority throughout the food and beverage supply chain. While manufacturers invest heavily in ingredients, processing, and quality control, packaging also plays an important role in maintaining product integrity from production to final delivery.

Whether transporting edible oils, liquid food ingredients, flavorings, concentrates, or other food products, packaging must be manufactured under controlled conditions to help minimize contamination risks and support product quality. This is why many food and beverage manufacturers increasingly look for packaging suppliers that operate under internationally recognized food safety management systems.

The Growing Importance of Food-Safe Packaging

Consumer expectations, regulatory requirements, and global supply chains have raised the bar for food safety. Today’s manufacturers are expected to demonstrate robust controls not only within their own operations but throughout their supply networks.

Packaging is a critical part of that equation. Containers used to store and transport food products must be produced with consistent quality standards, effective hygiene controls, and rigorous manufacturing processes. A strong food safety culture at the packaging supplier level helps support the overall integrity of the supply chain.

Understanding FSSC 22000

FSSC 22000 is one of the most widely recognized food safety management system certifications in the world and is benchmarked by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).

The certification provides a structured framework for managing food safety risks through documented procedures, hazard analysis, process controls, employee training, and continuous improvement. Rather than relying solely on product inspections, FSSC 22000 focuses on building preventive controls throughout the manufacturing process.

For packaging manufacturers, certification demonstrates a commitment to producing packaging solutions under internationally recognized food safety standards.

Why Certified Packaging Matters

Choosing packaging manufactured in an FSSC 22000-certified facility provides additional assurance that food safety considerations are integrated into daily operations.

For food and beverage manufacturers, this can help:

  • Strengthen confidence in packaging quality and consistency
  • Support food safety and compliance requirements
  • Reduce supply chain risks
  • Protect product integrity during storage and transportation
  • Safeguard brand reputation and consumer trust

As food supply chains become increasingly complex, manufacturers are placing greater importance on partnering with suppliers that share their commitment to quality and food safety.

Greif’s Commitment to Food Safety in Asia Pacific

Greif supports food and beverage customers across Asia Pacific through a network of FSSC 22000-certified manufacturing facilities in China, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam.

At Greif, our ability to serve customers starts with the people leading our operations every day.

That is why Greif recently brought together nearly 200 Plant Managers from across our global manufacturing footprint for the first Plant Managers Forum in our company’s history. The purpose was to help make the best of Greif more consistent across every facility, every shift and every customer experience.

Strengthening Safety, Quality and Service

Customers depend on Greif for packaging solutions that are safe, reliable and delivered to specifications. Meeting that expectation across a global business takes more than individual experience at a single location. It requires shared tools, disciplined processes and a consistent way to turn operational knowledge into better performance.

The Greif Business System helps make that possible. It gives plant leaders a common approach for improving how work gets done, from identifying issues earlier to reducing waste and strengthening reliability. Over time, those daily improvements show up in the ways that matter most to customers: dependable quality, responsive service and greater confidence in supply.

During the forum, Plant Managers spent time connecting these operational practices to customer outcomes. Discussions focused on value creation at the plant level, operational discipline, performance visibility and real examples of how value can be protected or lost in daily operations.

The goal was not only to discuss what works. It was to help leaders take practical ideas back to their facilities and apply them in ways that improve performance for the customers we serve.

More Than 2,200 Years of Operational Experience

The forum also created space for plant leaders to learn from one another. Participants joined from across our Fiber, Steel, Polymer and Closures teams, representing 40 countries and regions and more than 2,200 combined years of Greif experience.

As a nearly 150-year-old company, that depth of knowledge is one of Greif’s strengths. Our plant leaders understand the products we make, the processes behind them and the expectations customers bring to every order. Many have built their expertise over decades on the plant floor and in operational leadership roles. Others bring fresh perspectives that help us continue challenging the way work gets done.

When one facility finds a better way to reduce downtime, improve changeovers or strengthen quality, that knowledge should not stay in one place. Bringing plant leaders together helps proven practices move faster across the business and creates more opportunities to apply what is already working.

Creating Customer Value Through One Greif

For customers, the benefit is stronger operations behind every product and service Greif provides. The experience of our plant leaders, combined with the discipline of the Greif Business System, helps us improve how work gets done across our manufacturing footprint.

That means better visibility, faster action and a continued focus on the quality and service customers expect from Greif.

The first Plant Managers Forum reinforced what it means to operate as One Greif. It brought together the people who turn strategy into action, connect daily operations to customer needs and execute the systems that will help ensure Greif’s success today and for the next 150 years and beyond.

With nearly 150 years of history, Greif is a global leader in industrial packaging products and services, recognized worldwide for quality, reliability, and innovation.

In Brazil, Greif’s nine manufacturing plants play a critical role in advancing the company’s sustainability commitments. These facilities, which serve customers across Brazil and Latin America, have collectively purchased International Renewable Energy Certificates (I-RECs) equivalent to their 2025 electricity consumption. Through this initiative, Greif is able to connect the electricity used across its operations to renewable energy sources.

The I-REC purchases support the offsetting of Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions across all nine Brazilian plants. By linking electricity consumption to renewable and traceable sources, Greif is taking meaningful steps toward reducing emissions and operating more responsibly throughout the region.

As highlighted by leadership within the Brazil operations, this achievement represents an important milestone for both the company and its customers:

“This certification reinforces our commitment to more sustainable operations while also delivering value to our customers. I would like to congratulate the entire Tri-Sure team for their strong focus on customers and sustainability.”

This initiative goes beyond internal impact, it creates direct value for customers. By partnering with Greif, customers can trust that the company’s sustainability actions are credible, measurable, and aligned with supporting their own environmental goals.

More than delivering product quality, Greif provides solutions that meet today’s industry expectations, combining global leadership with strong local responsibility.

Two years later, recovery efforts are well underway. It is within this renewed landscape that Greif reopens its industrial plant in Esteio in 2026, not simply as a company that has recovered, but as a symbol of resilience, reinvention, and progress. For Ricardo Goldenberg, Greif Steel Business Leader for Latin America, the reopening of the Esteio plant marks a meaningful step forward following the challenges faced in the region.

Da Destruição à Modernização - Tecnologia e Eficiência

What could have been a straightforward rebuild became an opportunity to rethink the operation entirely. Following the floods, Greif chose to invest in a modernized facility with expanded production capacity and advanced technologies. This transformation was explored in greater detail in a magazine article by Paint & Pintura Magazine that examines how the Esteio rebuild went far beyond restoration.

As Luiz Oliveira, Greif Commercial Leader, emphasizes: “We’re back. We believe in the recovery of Rio Grande do Sul, and we are ready to serve our customers.”

A new data matrix on every large steel drum is giving European customers traceability, efficiency, and compliance support that their operations demand.

Supply chain traceability has moved from a nice-to-have to a hard requirement across Europe, driven by rising regulatory pressure, faster recall expectations, and customers who need airtight documentation for food-grade and sensitive materials. Greif’s answer is Track & Trace: a data matrix code on every large steel drum that gives it a unique, scannable identity from the moment it leaves the manufacturing facility.

The technology is already live at Greif’s FSSC 22000-certified Europoort facility in the Netherlands, where customer demand for exactly this capability has been growing, and the team there has a lot to say about why it matters.

One Code. A Lot of Capability.

Each drum receives a data matrix code at the point of manufacture. That code carries a unique sequence number and can be loaded with customizable fields: production line and location, drum item codes, sales order information, supplier ID, and more. Customers scan the code at filling, using nothing more than a smartphone or standard industrial reader, enabling quick access to drum-specific information and supporting integration into their own processes.

The result is a leaner filling operation, a cleaner audit trail, and a faster path to batch control and recall response. For customers in food, chemical, and pharmaceutical markets where safety, accuracy and documentation are critical, that matters a great deal.

Traceability is a top priority for many of our customers, and we are excited to support them in this process. With a unique data matrix on each drum, customers can track every unit and add their own data along the way, improving efficiency and strengthening security across the product lifecycle.”

Jacob Demén, Sales Director, Greif Netherlands and Scandinavia

Designed to Fit the Way You Already Work

One of the deliberate design choices behind Track & Trace is simplicity. There’s no proprietary hardware to install, no complex onboarding, and no disruption to existing production lines. The data matrix sits on top of the drum where it’s easy to reach, and the scan works with tools customers already have on the floor.

Customers can use the scanned data to support their existing processes – from faster manual recording to integration with their own ERP systems, when applicable. This allows business at different stages of digitization to benefit immediately with reduced data entry and saved time, while enabling process integration in the long term.

Meeting and Exceeding What the Market Expects

Traceability requirements in Europe are only growing, driven by evolving food safety standards, chemical regulations, and customer sustainability commitments that increasingly demand supply chain transparency. Greif’s Track & Trace solution gives customers a practical, scalable way to support these needs by enabling drum-level identification, access to key production data and more.

The technology is currently available on large steel drums in EMEA. Customers interested in adding Track & Trace to their drum program should contact their local Greif sales representative to discuss specifications and implementation.

Greif offers a diverse range of small plastic containers, including bottles, jerrycans and tight heads that are highly customizable to meet the unique needs of customers.

In today’s market, small plastic bottles are more than packaging, they are critical components of brand reputation, consistency, product safety and compliance. As more suppliers enter the conversation, it’s important to ask a simple question:

Is your packaging provider simply making containers or engineering solutions?

At Greif, we believe leadership in small plastic bottles is earned through performance, innovation and partnership.

Built for Industrial Performance

Greif’s small plastic bottles, jerrycans and tight head containers are manufactured using high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and designed specifically for real-world industrial use.

We focus on delivering containers that perform consistently across:

  • Crop protection and specialty chemicals
  • Automotive fluids
  • Animal health
  • And More

This means prioritizing durability, chemical resistance and operational reliability ensuring containers hold up under demanding conditions from filling line to end use. Because in these industries, packaging isn’t just a container, it’s part of the product system.

Advanced Barrier Technology That Protects What Matters

For sensitive or hazardous formulations, standard packaging is not enough.

Greif offers a range of versatile and robust tecnologia de barreira solutions designed to:

  • Mitigate risks of permeation and chemical migration
  • Reduce the potential for environmental exposure
  • Extend product shelf life
  • Protect content from external environmental factors
  • Contain hazardous gases and volatile components

These multi-layer barrier solutions provide an added layer of protection where product integrity, safety and compliance are critical.

Designed for the Real World

A container that works in theory but fails in practice is not a solution.

Greif integrates venting technologies, optimized neck finishes and ergonomic handle designs to ensure:

  • Controlled, glug-free pouring
  • Safer dispensing
  • Improved operator experience
  • Reduced workplace incidents

These details matter on the production floor, in warehouses and at the point of use.

Customization Backed by Expertise

Many suppliers offer standard containers. Greif offers partnership.

Our team collaborates with customers to tailor packaging to exact specifications including:

  • Custom heights and weights
  • Neck sizes and closure compatibility
  • A portfolio of barrier solutions
  • Color matching and branding support
  • Labeling and sleeving services

With UN approvals we help simplify regulatory pathways while accelerating speed to market.

Scale, Reliability and Long-Term Partnership

In a volatile supply chain environment, dependability matters as much as design.

Greif brings global manufacturing capabilities, technical expertise and decades of industry experience to ensure consistent quality and reliable supply. We are not reacting to market trends, we are shaping them.

When competitors begin talking about capabilities, Greif customers can point to proven performance. Because leadership isn’t about entering the category. It’s about elevating it.

Looking for a packaging partner that engineers for performance, sustainability and long-term success? Let’s talk.

At Greif, we believe that sustainability and business performance go hand in hand. A great example of this is our work with sustainable financing, a tool that rewards companies for improving their sustainability performance, and the value it creates for our customers, suppliers, and communities.

What is sustainable financing?

Sustainable financing refers to financial arrangements, such as loans, that are linked to a company’s sustainability performance. If the company meets defined environmental, social, or governance (ESG) targets, it can receive more favorable financial terms.

In short: the better the sustainability performance, the better the financing conditions.

Using EcoVadis to Measure Performance

To track progress, Greif relies on EcoVadis, one of the most trusted global sustainability rating platforms. EcoVadis evaluates companies across environmental impact, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement, and issues a score that reflects overall sustainability performance.

Our Sustainable Financing Journey

In 2022, Greif signed a sustainable financing agreement that linked our loan pricing to achieving a targeted EcoVadis score. Once we reached that target, we unlocked meaningful financial benefits for the company. These savings strengthen our ability to reinvest in our operations, enhance our sustainability programs, and increase the value we deliver to our customers and suppliers.

Why this Matters

This year, Greif renewed its sustainable financing agreement, which now extends through 2031 and remains tied to our EcoVadis performance. As our score continues to improve, so does our potential to unlock additional financial benefits, further reinforcing the connection between strong sustainability performance and positive business results.

Sustainable financing is more than a financial mechanism — it reflects Greif’s long-term commitment to responsible growth.

  • For customers: Improved sustainability performance enhances supply chain resilience and supports your own ESG goals.
  • For suppliers: It underscores our shared commitment to responsible sourcing and ethical business practices.
  • For communities: Better sustainability performance contributes to reduced environmental impact and stronger social responsibility.

Greif’s sustainable financing work demonstrates that doing the right thing for the environment and society can also drive stronger business results. By continuously improving our sustainability performance, we reinforce operational strength, build stakeholder trust, and contribute to a more sustainable future.

At Greif, continuous improvement is more than a commitment; it is how we serve our customers every day. We are proud to announce that our Greif Falkenberg facility has achieved FSSC 22000 certification for its steel drum production line as of January.

Our Falkenberg site manufactures steel drums, jerrycans, plastic drums, and IBCs, supporting a wide range of industries across Scandinavia. As food safety requirements evolve and regulatory expectations increase, we recognized the need to expand our certified capabilities to better support customers operating in food and sensitive product markets.

What This Means for Our Customers

With FSSC 22000 certification now in place for steel drum production, we can offer steel drums suitable for food contact, produced under a globally recognized food safety management system. For customers, this provides:

  • Increased confidence in packaging safety and quality
  • Alignment with internationally recognized food safety standards
  • Strengthened supply chain assurance
  • Support in meeting evolving regulatory requirements

This milestone builds on our existing FSSC 22000 certification for IBC production, making the extension to steel drums a natural and strategic progression.

Responding to a Changing Regulatory Landscape

With new European regulations restricting BPA in food-contact materials and key compliance deadlines approaching in 2027, producers require packaging partners that are prepared for the future.

In 2025, Greif introduced RDL100FA, a BPA-free internal lacquer developed in alignment with upcoming EU regulatory requirements. Our FSSC 22000-certified steel drum production, combined with this BPA-free solution, strengthens our ability to support customers operating in regulated food markets with confidence.

As Jacob Demén, Sales Director Scandinavia & the Netherlands, shares:

“This is an important milestone for us in continuing to serve our customers. Since we already hold FSSC 22000 certification for our IBC production, extending this certification to our steel drum line was a natural next step. This development is driven by customer feedback and the market trends we observe. Standing still is not an option. We must continue to move forward and enhance our capabilities to serve our customers. This is a solid step toward our vision of providing legendary customer service.”

At Greif Falkenberg, achieving certification is not the endpoint, it is part of our ongoing commitment to strengthening quality, compliance, and service for the customers who rely on us.

Barrier Technology: A Conversation Worth Having

Barrier technology isn’t usually the kind of topic that sparks lively conversations, unless you’re talking with someone like Victor Lusvardi from Greif. What started as a technical discussion quickly turned into an approachable, insightful walkthrough of what barrier technology really is, why it matters, and where it’s headed.

What Is Barrier Technology?

Most industrial packaging is made from high‑density polyethylene (HDPE). It’s strong and versatile, but it’s also more porous than many people realize.

Under a microscope, HDPE has tiny pathways that allow certain formulation components — solvents, surfactants, fragrances, active ingredients — to slowly migrate into or through the plastic. Over time, that can lead to product loss, performance changes, odors, and safety concerns.

As Victor put it, without a barrier, you might fill a container “and a month later, you’d find half or maybe even less of that fuel left… You want what you’re putting in the container on day one to be the same at day 100,” Victor explained.

Barrier technology prevents that migration. Whether applied as a coating or built into the container structure, its purpose is simple: keep the product inside the package exactly as it was formulated.

Barrier Performance and Sustainability

Barrier technology isn’t just about protecting formulations, it’s a sustainability tool as well.

A strong barrier prevents the product from permeating into the plastic, which means the container can be decontaminated and reused. That’s a foundational part of Greif’s approach to circularity. Using fewer materials and extending the life of each package reduces environmental impact and aligns with tightening global regulations.

Victor emphasized how important it is to balance performance with sustainability and barrier effectiveness makes that possible.

Common Challenges When Adopting Barrier Technology

Many companies come to Greif with the same core question: Which barrier should we use?

The honest answer? It depends.

Compatibility is the top concern and ensuring the customer’s specific formulation won’t interact negatively with the barrier material is crucial. Format matters, too: not every barrier solution can be applied across all bottle sizes or designs. And of course, cost plays a role, since not all barrier technologies are created equal from a budget standpoint.

Greif’s approach is to partner closely with customers to find the best technical and economical fit. “We stand ready… to help them sort that out,” Victor shared.

What’s Driving Barrier Technology Innovation Right Now

A few big trends are shaping the future of barrier technology:

  1. Regulatory Pressure
Requirements around PFAS and the use of recycled content are accelerating innovation. Barriers increasingly need to prevent not only the product from escaping out of the packaging, but also contaminants from migrating into the product.
  2. Reciclabilidade
Multilayer containers (like traditional CoEx) can be harder to recycle. Greif is advancing more recyclable alternatives, including EcoEx, a more sustainable take on the classic multilayer approach.
  3. High‑Performance Monomaterial Solutions
Technologies like In‑Mold Barrier and SiOx are gaining traction because they offer strong performance while keeping the package fully recyclable. SiOx, for example, uses a silicon oxide coating which is “similar to glass, but not brittle,” Victor noted, giving excellent protection without introducing new material types.

A Quick Look at Greif’s Barrier Technologies

Victor summarized Greif’s portfolio into three barrier technology solutions:

  • In‑Mold Barrier: A cost‑effective, widely used fluorination‑based barrier with decades of proven performance.
  • SiOx: A silicon oxide internal coating that keeps the container fully recyclable while enhancing resistance to solvents and oxygen.
  • EcoEx: An improved multilayer technology designed for easier reprocessing at end of life.

Each comes with different strengths, and Greif works closely with customers to identify the right match based on formulation, region, cost, and sustainability goals.

Getting Started With Barrier Technology

For companies interested in incorporating barrier solutions, the process is refreshingly straightforward… start the conversation with Greif.

Share details about what’s going inside the container and what size/format you need. Collaborate on testing to validate performance. Align on the right barrier, the right packaging, and the right cost profile.

In Victor’s words, “It starts with a phone call.”

To be a farmer is to work in constant uncertainty. Long before food reaches a shelf, a market, or a table, it begins as a quiet decision: when to plant, what to plant, how to protect it, and how much risk to take. Those decisions ripple outward, shaping families, communities, businesses, and entire economies. Farmers rely on products and services—seed, equipment, packaging, logistics—and each one matters.

Farming is not just an occupation.

It is a commitment to people you may never meet, meals you may never eat, and seasons you cannot control. The agricultural and specialty chemicals our customers produce help reduce risk, but Mother Nature remains undefeated.

Farmers are also stewards of trust. When people buy food, they trust that someone made careful choices on their behalf. That responsibility looks different around the world: a rice farmer in Southeast Asia, a wheat grower in the Midwest, a smallholder coffee farmer in Central America, or a dairy farmer in Europe all face unique climates, markets, and regulations. Yet they share one truth: nature sets the rules, and adaptability is non negotiable. Weather shifts, soil changes, input costs rise, and demand fluctuates, yet farmers show up every day knowing control will always be partial.

To be a farmer is to take on uncertainty so others can depend on consistent, safe, and affordable food. Every season, they choose to plant with the belief that tomorrow is worth investing in. Understanding farming requires seeing beyond yield numbers and acreage, recognizing the emotional investment, the anxiety of a late rain, the relief of a strong stand, the disappointment of loss, and the quiet satisfaction of a successful season. Farmers plan with optimism because pessimism is paralyzing. Every planting is an act of belief in the future.

Greif supports the agricultural and specialty chemical industries with durable, high performance packaging designed to keep sensitive formulations and food products stable and at peak quality. Our portfolio includes sustainable barrier solutions such as In-Mold Barrier (IMB) as well as a full range of small plastics, jerrycans, and steel or plastic drums, each engineered to protect product integrity throughout the supply chain.

Our role is simply to help protect the products through packaging and barrier technologies designed to perform reliably in the environments where farmers and our customers operate. If you’d like to explore these solutions or discuss the needs of your specific formulations, we’re always here to continue the conversation.

When one formula isn’t enough, custom dual-chamber plastic bottles from Greif give brands the flexibility to deliver more, without complicating the customer experience. Designed to keep two contents separate until use, these bottles help protect performance, extend shelf life, and elevate how your product is experienced.

Whether you’re launching an innovative formulation or refining an existing one, Greif partners with you to design packaging that fits your product, your process, and your customers’ expectations. From chamber ratios to dispensing systems, every detail is engineered to support ease of use, reliability, and brand differentiation.

Designed to Keep Two Contents Separate Until the Moment of Use

Many products work best when their components are kept apart until the exact moment they’re needed. Greif’s custom dual-chamber plastic bottles are engineered to do just that, protecting product performance while simplifying how end users apply, mix, or activate the contents.

In industrial and specialty chemical applications, dual-chamber bottles are often used to separate a base material from an activator or catalyst. This ensures consistent performance, reduces the risk of premature reaction, and allows operators to mix only what they need, when they need it, minimizing waste and downtime.

For agricultural products, dual-chamber packaging allows concentrated actives to be packaged separately from stabilizers or additives. Farmers and applicators benefit from extended shelf life, safer handling, and accurate dosing at the point of use, even in challenging field conditions.

In cleaning and maintenance products, one chamber holds a powerful cleaning agent, while the other contains a fragrance, booster, or neutralizer. The components combine only during dispensing, delivering maximum effectiveness while maintaining stability during storage and transport.

Dual-chamber bottles are also well-suited for formulations that require freshness or activation, such as adhesives, coatings, or specialty lubricants. By keeping ingredients isolated until dispensing, manufacturers can preserve product quality while providing customers with a more reliable, repeatable outcome.

Why customers choose Greif dual-chamber bottles

Throughout each use case, Greif works closely with customers to customize chamber volumes, bottle geometry, and dispensing mechanisms, ensuring the two components mix as intended and perform consistently in real-world environments.

Dual-chamber bottles are designed for performance.

With 148 years of history, Greif is a global leader in industrial packaging solutions, built on a foundation of innovation, reliability, and strong customer partnerships. With a solid presence across Latin America and around the world, Greif has long believed that the most meaningful innovations do not start in laboratories or trend reports — they start with listening to customers.

The Knock Down Drum (KDD) is a clear example of this philosophy in action. This innovation was not created because the market was asking for “something new,” but because customers face very real operational challenges that conventional steel drums cannot solve.

In many cases, customer operations require steel drums to be supplied across long distances, sometimes through regions with limited or precarious road infrastructure, and often to industrialized island markets where access depends almost entirely on maritime transportation. Traditional fully assembled 200-liter drums create inefficiencies across transportation, storage, and handling. Shipping empty drums occupies excessive space, increases freight costs, and reduces supply chain flexibility, especially when serving remote locations or islands of strategic importance in regions such as Central America.

Rather than requesting a standard product from a catalog, customers ask a more powerful question: Is there a better way?

That question becomes the starting point of a collaborative development journey.

Instead of offering an off-the-shelf alternative, Greif teams work closely with customers to deeply understand their operations — how and where drums are filled, warehousing and transportation constraints, the realities of road and maritime logistics, on-site assembly capabilities, and strict requirements related to safety, quality, and performance. This process reveals a fundamental insight: customers do not need drums delivered fully assembled; they need drums delivered efficiently, regardless of distance or logistical complexity.

With this understanding, Greif engineers, operations teams, and commercial partners reimagine the steel drum itself. The result is the Knock Down Drum (KDD) — a steel drum solution designed to be shipped in a collapsed, space-efficient format and assembled closer to the point of use, without compromising performance.

The KDD system is built around two integrated stages. First, drum kits are produced at Greif manufacturing facilities. Drum bodies are manufactured and collapsed at the Greif plant, dramatically reducing the volume required for road and ocean transportation. The drums are prepared as knock-down kits, consisting of the collapsed body, lid, bottom, and closure systems, all produced under Greif’s strict quality standards. This configuration ensures maximum logistical efficiency while maintaining full product integrity.

Once the kits arrive at the customer’s warehouse — whether on the mainland or on an island destination — the second stage begins. Greif installs a dedicated machinery system that expands and completes the drum manufacturing process on site. This allows drums to be assembled according to local demand, providing flexibility, improved inventory control, and supply reliability even in locations with limited infrastructure or complex supply routes.

The benefits for customers are immediate and measurable. A standard 40-foot container, which typically carries 280 to 350 conventional drums, can transport 1,500 to 1,800 collapsed KDD drums — up to six times more drums per shipment. In warehousing, a pallet that normally holds only four conventional drums can accommodate around 100 KDD drums, delivering a space optimization of more than 2,400%. This translates into significant freight cost reductions, dramatic space optimization, reduced warehouse footprint, and a more resilient and responsive supply chain.

More than a product, the Knock Down Drum represents the outcome of a true partnership. Its development reflects Greif’s willingness to challenge traditional assumptions, invest in customer-driven innovation, and bring cross-functional teams together around real-world operational needs. What begins as a tailored solution for specific logistical challenges evolves into a scalable system that now supports customers across diverse regions and supply environments, without losing its customer-first DNA.

The story of the KDD reinforces a simple truth: the most impactful innovations are born from listening, collaboration, and decisive action. At Greif, innovation is not about inventing for the sake of invention — it is about helping customers operate better, smarter, and more sustainably. The Knock Down Drum stands as a testament to that philosophy and to what is possible when customer challenges lead the way.

From Customer Challenge to Industry Standard Innovation: The Story Behind the Greif Knock Down Drum (KDD)

Innovation rarely starts in a lab. At Greif, it begins with a customer conversation.

O Tambor de Derrubar (KDD) is a powerful example of how Greif partners with customers to solve real-world challenges, going beyond standard packaging to create tailored, forward-thinking solutions. This steel drum innovation wasn’t developed because the market demanded “something new,” but because a customer faced a specific operational challenge and traditional packaging wasn’t enough.

A Customer Problem Without a Standard Solution

The customer approached Greif with a complex logistical challenge. Their operations required steel drums, but traditional, fully assembled drums created inefficiencies across transportation, storage, and handling. Shipping empty drums consumed significant space, drove up freight costs, and limited flexibility in their supply chain.

They didn’t ask Greif for a catalog product.

They asked, “Is there a better way?”

This question became the starting point for a collaborative development process.

Listening First: Understanding the Real Need

Rather than proposing an off-the-shelf alternative, Greif teams took the time to understand the customer’s whole operation:

  • How and where the drums were filled
  • Constraints in warehousing and transportation
  • Assembly capabilities at the customer’s site
  • Safety, quality, and performance requirements
KDD Infographic

This deep understanding revealed the core issue: the customer didn’t need drums delivered assembled; they needed drums delivered efficiently.

That insight shifted the entire approach.

Co-Creating the Knock Down Drum

Greif engineers, operations teams, and commercial partners worked closely with the customer to reimagine the steel drum itself. The result was the Knock Down Drum (KDD), a steel drum designed to be shipped in a knocked-down, flat-packed format and assembled closer to the point of use.

Three key principles guided the development of KDD: customer efficiency first, by reducing freight and storage costs; operational practicality to ensure assembly can be done safely and reliably; and no compromise on performance to maintain the strength, integrity, and quality expected from a Greif steel drum.

Every design decision was tested against the customer’s real-world environment, not theoretical assumptions.

Tangible Benefits for the Customer

The impact of the KDD was immediate and measurable for the customer. They benefited from significant freight savings due to improved load efficiency, while also cutting warehouse footprint for empty packaging inventory. Improved supply chain flexibility, enabling better planning and responsiveness, was also a significant benefit. All of this was accomplished while keeping product protection and performance, even after on-site assembly.

Most importantly, the solution was purpose-built for their operation; not a workaround, but a proper fit.

More Than a Product: A Partnership Outcome

The Knock Down Drum is not just a packaging innovation—it’s a reflection of Greif’s approach to customer relationships.

This development demonstrated a willingness to challenge traditional product assumptions, cross-functional collaboration focused on customer success, and an investment in innovation driven by real needs rather than trends.

By working side by side with the customer, Greif transformed a logistical constraint into a competitive advantage.

Setting a New Standard

While the KDD was developed for a specific customer need, its success highlighted a broader opportunity. The concept opened new possibilities for customers facing similar challenges around transportation efficiency, storage limitations, or decentralized filling operations.

What began as a single customer request evolved into a scalable solution without losing its customer-first DNA.

Innovation Starts With Listening

The story of the Knock Down Drum reinforces a simple truth: the most impactful innovations come from listening closely and acting decisively.

At Greif, product development is not about inventing for the sake of invention. It’s about partnering with customers, understanding their challenges, and building solutions that help them operate better, smarter, and more sustainably.

The KDD stands as a testament to that philosophy and to what’s possible when customer needs lead the way.

Powering Sustainable Packaging for Our Customers: Greif Huizhou Goes Solar

At Greif, sustainability is more than a corporate goal; it’s a commitment we make to our customers every day. That commitment took another critical step forward with the successful launch of a rooftop solar photovoltaic system at our Huizhou facility in China.

This investment strengthens our ability to deliver reliable, responsible, and competitive steel drum solutions, while helping customers meet their own environmental and sustainability objectives.

Clean Energy That Supports Customer Goals

The newly commissioned solar system at Greif Huizhou includes 1,342 rooftop solar panels, generating approximately 640,000 kWh of clean electricity each year. Once fully operational, the system will supply around 30% of the plant’s total power needs.

For our customers, this means:

  1. Lower-carbon manufacturing is embedded directly into the products they purchase
  2. Greater alignment with ESG, Scope 3 emissions, and sustainability reporting goals
  3. Confidence that their packaging partner is actively reducing environmental impact

The system is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 320 metric tons of CO₂ annually, the equivalent of planting more than 14,000 trees.

Building a More Resilient Supply Chain

Sustainability and operational excellence go hand in hand. By generating clean energy onsite, Greif Huizhou improves energy resilience while managing costs more effectively. Based on peak electricity rates, the system is projected to save around $9,000 annually, helping maintain cost competitiveness without compromising quality or service.

These efficiencies support what matters most to customers:

  1. Stable pricing
  2. Consistent production
  3. Long-term supply reliability

As Blacky Wang, Plant Manager at Greif Huizhou, explains:

“The completion and official operation of the photovoltaic project marks a solid step forward for Greif Huizhou on the path of clean energy transformation and sustainable manufacturing. It not only demonstrates Greif’s leadership in green manufacturing but also strengthens our competitiveness and profitability.”

Sustainable Manufacturing, Without Trade-Offs

Customers today are looking for partners who can help them grow responsibly—without sacrificing performance, safety, or value. By integrating renewable energy directly into our operations, we’re delivering:

  1. High-quality steel drum production
  2. Lower environmental impact per unit
  3. A shared pathway toward a more sustainable future

Partnering for tomorrow

The Greif Huizhou solar project is one of many steps we are taking globally to reduce our carbon footprint and support greener manufacturing practices. Most importantly, it reflects our commitment to helping customers achieve their sustainability ambitions, today and for the long term.
